Who was Johnny Lewis?

1944 — 2025

Johnny Lewis is recognised as Australia's greatest boxing trainer. Across four decades he coached world champions, Olympians and countless amateurs — building careers on discipline, footwork and a deep respect for the craft.

The Johnny Lewis Cup is our way of honouring that legacy — bringing amateur boxing back to the community he gave so much to.

Born in Sydney

John Alfred Lewis born 18 March in Bankstown, raised in Erskineville.

1957
First steps in boxing

Began training at Newtown Police Boys Club aged 13 under Snowy MacFadyen and Jack Blom.

1961
Took over Newtown PCYC

Aged 17, appointed head trainer of the Newtown PCYC boxing club.

1978
First Commonwealth gold

Cornered Phil McElwaine to middleweight gold at the Edmonton Commonwealth Games.

1985
Fenech turns pro

Jeff Fenech turns professional under Lewis after captaining Australia at the '84 Olympics.

1988
Seoul Olympics

Appointed head trainer of the Australian Amateur Boxing Team for the Seoul Games.

1995
Tszyu unifies titles

Guided Kostya Tszyu's rise to undisputed light welterweight champion of the world.

2006
OAM & Hall of Fame

Awarded the Order of Australia Medal and inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame.
